What happens when you are forced to leave home, go through a terrifying journey and find yourself in London? Will you find community? Will you find peace or more struggle? What about those who didn’t make it across the sea?
Ironing Out is a devised play combining physical theatre, mime, dance, poetry, hip hop in English and Arabic, shadow theatre and improvisation. A myriad of characters come in and out of an Ironing Shop, held by the respected and loved community figure the Iron Man. The shop is located in a famous South London borough, at the bottom of a block threatened by developers. The characters become entangled in a quest to find lost ones and in the struggle to save the shop and their community. Based on real life experiences and wild imagination, ‘Ironing Out’ explores young migrants’ resilience in the shadow of mental health, exile, racism and displacement.
Alleyway Radical Theatre is a migrants led theatre company which formed in 2014 with a will to shed light on migrants’ struggles. We mix shadow theatre, poetry, mime and hip hop in Arabic and English. Our first show ‘Here I Am’ explored migrants’ journeys through fortress Europe and the UK border. We come from Palestine, Hackney, Kashmir, Spain, Japan and beyond.
