Camberwell Community Xmas on the Green

Thanks to everyone who participated in, volunteered at and enjoyed our FREE Camberwell Community Xmas last Saturday on Camberwell Green

Our free, fun festive event was launched by Southwark Mayor Michael Situ, Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams and Theatre Peckham artistic director Suzann McLean and actors from their show Rapunzel, who read out a poem in honour of Camberwell’s community!

As well as the active kids’ games, crafts and food decoration stalls, the event also provided free lunch, food, clothes, toiletries, cost of living advice and free health checks and information.

Foxglove favourite tree for Camberwell Green 
Thanks to all who responded by email or on our Twitter/X poll to vote for the tree to replace the old Chestnut tree on Camberwell Green, which was diseased and removed. The foxglove came out a clear winner and we will pass this information to Southwark Council’s tree department, who are also taking comments directly. Read the full notice from Southwark Council here.  


Black History Walk: new map on Camberwell Green
A fantastic new map installation designed by local artist Tayo Fatunla has gone up on Camberwell Green to signpost Camberwell’s Black History Walk created by local historian Stephen Bourne. With QR Code and map to guide walkers.

Come and join in the FREE fun, food and festive cheer on the green on Saturday 9th December 11am to 2pm at our Camberwell Community Xmas!

Mr & Mrs Santa and Rapunzel are coming to the Saturday market at Camberwell Green bringing a free Caribbean lunch, free treat, decorating and badge-making fun, crafts for all ages, festive choir & music and fun-packed active games to get the kids moving! 

The event also aims to create awareness of food banks and pantries in the area and provide essential health, welfare and cost of living support, alongside free items such as toiletries, clothes and food.

The Camberwell Community Xmas celebrations kick off with Mr & Mrs Santa, alongside characters from Theatre Peckham’s highly anticipated Xmas show Rapunzel (5-24 December). They will be touring local estates on a Pedal Me cargo bike ‘reindeer sleigh’ and giving out satsumas to local children on their way to the green.

Vote to replace old chestnut tree on Camberwell Green
Goodbye to the Chestnut tree on Camberwell Green. Sadly this old  tree was diseased removed this week. Southwark Council will plant a new semi-mature tree early 2024 to replace it and is reaching out to the local community to choose between 3 trees. Read the full notice from Southwark Council here

Local businesses can join the Southwark climate collective. More than 70 businesses have signed up already. The free 12-month programme offers bespoke audits, recommendations, specialist training and support worth up to £6k for Southwark small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reduce carbon emissions, increase efficiency, and cut costs. Apply by 31 December

Southwark Safer Neighbourhood Board: public meeting 
Want to find out more about community safety and policing within Southwark? The next Public Meeting of the Southwark Safer Neighbourhood Board  will be held this Monday 11th December, 6pm, at Dene Community Centre, 95B Meeting House Lane, Peckham, SE15 2TU. The meeting will cover ward panels and policing in Southwark and a police update.

Streets for People is a short survey by Southwark Council to find out what you would like to see on your street and in your neighbourhood under their ambitions for: Cleaner air; Safer and quieter streets; Healthy travel options; Greener and more pleasant spaces, and a better place for all. The survey here is open until March 2024. In order to be more inclusive, Southwark Council is also conducting door-to-door surveys in-person to get views from the wider community.

Southwark Council is offering everyone a free day pass to try out one of their local leisure centres. The pass will get you a free swim session, a free gym session and a tour of the centre.

Artist call-out to lead children’s workshops
South London Gallery’s Art Block Commission Open Call is seeking proposals from local artists and creatives to lead a series of workshops with children and young people (ages 6-16). Sessions take place over 12 weeks in Art Block, a free creative space on Sceaux Gardens Estate. Deadline: 27 November 2023. Full details here.

SE5 Forum’s Feel Good Festival on Camberwell Green last summer was a fantastic success and attracted nearly 1000 visitors. 

This summer, we are inviting all the community in Camberwell to our Feel Good Festival 2023 with two free health and wellbeing events. 

• Come down for free food, music, henna and face painting

• Stay to join in free taster sessions for all ages: from exercise, yoga, tai chi, chair-based exercise and roller skating, to arts and crafts, nutrition and children’s tasty treats workshops and community gardening. 

• Get essential community health support – with food banks and pantries, and vital mini-health checks, mental health advice and signposting from the NHS. 

All free for all the community. 

The festival brings together local organisations and charities, health professionals, food banks and pantries, health organisations and volunteers, all offering their services for free. 

This year, the festival is generously supported by King’s College Hospital Charity supportkings.org.uk and Changing Lives, Lambeth Council’s Social Values Fund lambeth.gov.uk/changing-lives

Calm yourself with mindfulness, yoga or life-coaching. 

Enjoy a free Community Kitchen feast from Spring Community Hub, plus children’s tasty treats workshops, face-painting, henna tattoos and local choirs.

Growth & Wellbeing – Ruskin Park, 15 July, 11am-3pm 

Improve your mental and physical wellbeing with free gardening sessions and tree walks, yoga, tai chi and zumba, mindful art workshops such as clay modelling.

Listen to music from a local choir, or get a unique henna tattoo, all in the beautiful, uplifting setting of the park. 

Stay well with a mini-health check and signposting to local services at the Lambeth Together’s Health & Wellbeing Bus. 

Taste delicious free smoothies from Healthy Living Platform, who will be running their community food pantry.

Mural Public Consultation: Masterman House Wall. 
Camberwell Identity Group is asking the public for their views on commissioning a mural on Masterman House wall (below). Tomorrow, Saturday 20 May, 10am-5pm they will be at Rust Sq/ Burgess Park talking to passersby, residents, dog walkers, parents with children and anyone interested! The dominant theme will be celebrating local hero Kye Whyte, BMX silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics and former resident of Masterman House. Other themes can be included. Dive into the music hall past of Camberwell with historian Richard Norman as part of SE5 Forum’s Camberwell Talks and in collaboration with @CamberwellArts. 

The talk ties in with the Camberwell Arts Festival 2023 theme: It’s Showtime (10-18 June). 
Richard’s Camberwell Talk will unfold the various forms of entertainment, from Victorian times to the end of the twentieth century, covering Music Hall, Theatre and Cinema and the buildings which were especially constructed to entertain the folk of Camberwell and beyond. Delving further into South London’s heritage, the talk will also include the contribution Camberwell has made to the world of entertainment during the early days of pioneering film production and music hall comedy.
This will be a well-illustrated talk also using samples of songs and music. Richard Norman is a local historian specialising in buildings designed for entertainment and has given talks at the Victorian and Albert Museum, Tate Modern and many local history societies.

 The Met Police Ride Along Scheme
The Met Police is publicising its Ride Along Scheme, which offers members of the public the chance to join its officers on patrol and experience daily policing first hand. You can also give feedback to police from your perspective as a member of the community. You must be aged 16 or over and live in London. You’ll need to fill in a consent form and pass a criminal record check. You can join the following units: Emergency Policing Response Team; Territorial Support Group; Violent Crime Task Force; or the Roads Policing Team. To apply, fill in the online application form.


 FixMyStreet App in Southwark:Residents in Southwark can now use the FixMyStreet App to report fly-tipping, graffiti, potholes and more through the online app and web service.  The app has been used successfully by other boroughs.


  New free fob for the safe cycle parking hub at Denmark Hill Station is now available from Govia Thameslink. Collect your free fob at the ticket office at the station’s Champion Hill entrance.

SE5 Forum is proud to present two new events coming up soon: Ruskin Tree Walks and Camberwell Talks:

Free Ruskin Tree Walk (& Draw)
Sunday 5th March, 2pm and 3pm

Following on from a successful event last year (including the making of a film), SE5 Forum and The Camberwell Society present the 2023 edition of our free RUSKIN TREE WALK, with optional drawing workshop.  

The guided tree walk around Ruskin Park will be led by volunteers from King’s College Hospital and Friends of Ruskin Park to explore linkages between trees, nature and wellbeing. 

They will present key insights about John Ruskin, the Victorian artist and thinker, written by world leading experts on his ideas on nature. 

After each walk, you can choose to participate in a free Tree Drawing Workshop led by local artist Natasha Godfrey. 

The two walks – at 2pm and 3pm – are limited to 30 people so book your free ticket/s quickly to avoid disappointment: **UPDATE – both walks are now booked up!

New free fob for Denmark Hill Station cycle hub
Govia Thameslink is re-launching the cycle parking hub at Windsor Walk,Denmark Hill Station this Monday 20th February, at 10am, with a free fob available to all cyclists to park their bikes safely. 

The Community Engagement Officer will be on hand to explain the new fob entry system and how you get access. From now on, free fobs will be available from the ticket office at the Champion Hill entrance. You just need to give your email address and show Photo ID. The fobs are registered for 12 months and will need reactivating once a year. They can also be activated at other cycle hub locations on the network. 

Disused railway arches in Camberwell to get £1.1m restoration
Five abandoned railway arches in Camberwell, which have been empty for over five years, will be given a £1.1 million investment so they can be rented out again amid the demand for industrial space.
